UNDERWATER PRISON IN RUMMU, ESTONIA

One of the most unique and surreal places in Estonia is definitely the Rummu underwater prison! It´s a submerged limestone quarry located about 1-hour drive from Tallinn. Big part of the quarry is now under a lake formed by groundwater, and is situated next to former prisons.
The quarry was formed in the late 1930s for open mining of limestone and Vasalemma marble. Excavation was performed as hard labour by Murru and Rummu prisoners.
The inmates excavated and processed limestone from the water-drained quarry until 1990s, when pumping of water ceased, and the quarry quickly filled with groundwater, immersing in it some of the utility building and machinery, thus forming a lake. The Rummu open-air prison was merged with the Murru prison in the 1990s, which itself was closed on 2012.
The Rummu quarry and underwater prison had become a featured location for nature photography, hiking, scuba diving, as a summer spot for musical and sport events and also as a filming location for its unique layout. It´s possible to visit Rummu Adventure center for many activities in the are! Place was also depicted in the video for Alan Walker´s hit song “Faded”.
Unfortunately underwater prison is practically impossible to access by car and even by foot. In early 2016. the area began to be closed off, because of issues with cars, and because swimming and diving into the lake is dangerous, and the owner has posted relevant warning signs. Although it seemed that a lot of people really are interested and they took the risk despite the signs.
Would you want to visit this kind of place? Have you heard anything about this kind of “under-water prison” before?

Üks ainulaadseim ja sürrealistlikum koht Eestis on kindlasti Rummu karjäär! Tegu on mahajäetud paekivi karjääriga, mis asub Tallinnast umbes tunnise autosõidu kaugusel. Suur osa endisest karjäärist, mis asub kahe vangla vahetuses läheduses, on põhjavee pealetungi tõttu muutunud järveks.

Karjäär alustas tegutsemist 1930-ndatel ning seal kaevandati paekivi ning Vasalemma marmorit. Töid viisid läbi kolmes vahetuses Murru ja Rummu vangla vangid. Kaevetöid tehti kuni 1990. aastani, mil lõpetati vee välja-pumpamine ning karjäär täitus kiiresti põhjaveega, mattes enda alla ka mõningad abihooned. Rummu avavangla liideti 2000.aastal Murru vanglaga, kuid viimane suleti lõplikult 2012.aastal.

Rummu karjäär on saanud populaarseks kohaks loodusfotograafide, matkajate, sukeldujate ning muusika- ja spordiürituste korraldajate seas. Ligitõmbavaks on kindlasti asukoha ainulaadne ümbrus ning vaated. Piirkonnas aktiivse aja veetmiseks tasub kindlasti külastada Rummu Seikluskeskust, kus pakutakse igasugu põnevaid tegevusi. Lisaks oli Rummu kujutatud ka populaarses Alan Walker´i muusikavideos “Faded”.

Kahjuks on nüüdseks sinna pea võimatu ligi pääseda. 2016.aasta alguses hakati ala sulgema, kuna järves ujumine ja sukeldumine on väidetavalt ohtlik. Omanik on välja pannud ka hoiatavad sildid, kuid suuri huvilisi need ilmselgelt eemale ei peleta, sest rahvast liikus piirkonnas jätkuvalt üpris palju.

Kas oled ise Rummu karjääris jõudnud käia? Kas julgeksid seal ka ujuda või sukelduda? Mida arvad sellest, et ala on suures osas üldsegi suletud ning turistidele külastamine keelatud?

We were supposed to visit Rummu last summer on our roadtrip in Estonia, but my husband had managed to find another place called Rummu on the other side of Tallinn, and we went to the wrong place! 😀 Unfortunately it was our last day on the trip, so we had to postpone the visit till next time. Maybe the upcoming summer we'll try again! 🙂 Amazing pictures!
